This is my first visit to Chennai, the third largest city in India. After more than 30 hours of flying and an interim transitioning at Singapore,
I finally arrived at the destination city almost at midnight. Checked in a hotel not too far away from the airport, stayed on bed for a
couple of hours and then waked up due to the jet lag. I was very eager to get a first impression
of India, so, went out of the main hotel gate in the morning, and took this picture.


这是我第一次来到金奈——这个印度的第三大城市。经过30多个小时的飞行和转机，终于在半夜到达了这个城市。住进离机场不远的一家宾馆。可由于时差，睡了2个多小时又醒了。我急于想对印度有个第一印象，于是走出宾馆大门拍下了这张照片（应该是图2那张）。

Sorry the previous photo should have be my 2nd post. I am writing some background information here for that photo,
and post the image for what I worte previously.

I went to the beach in the afternoon. On the road, found both malnutritioned skinny people and also over-stuffed
people with apparent central adiposity. Maybe this is a city in the south and most of them are Tamils with dark
skins, I could not find any beauties showing over and over on Indian sing-and-dance TV program. After gotten to the
beach, witnessed that two fishmen came ashore riding the boat taken in this picture. The happy fishmen caught
a big fish that need two people to carry together. After the fishmen left, I was busy taking pictures of the boat, and
suddenly found the young lovers through my camera eyepiece. I never had a chance to see how handsome and
how beautiful the young couple were, can just say that they are one out of a thousand from the locals.

Thus I would like to name the previouos photo as 'Modern and Ancient' or 'Time and Transition'.

红玫版主, 佩服你的游记的风格. 只是在下段位不够, 只能如此给一个impression which does not help much to present the country in any depth. As a visitor, I only stayed there for 4 days, and three of these days were in the hotel. So, really there was not much happened and I could not write much about it.

Contrary to other parts of the world that I have been to, what shows on bill boards frequently shows ads for IT and bio-science education. Embedded in a infrastructure building that might be 15 years lagged behind that in China, I was thinking of the term 'The great leap forward' when I saw these boards, hope they would be luckier than us.

The hotel that I stayed features a small garden with a swimming pool. With more than $200 a day per room, I could hardly find indigenous Indian guests in the hotel. I did meet some Chinese engineers who went to the city because a Chinese company had sold some heavy equipment to the harbor there.

The two fishmen came ashore on the boat showing in the first picture of this thread. Some small fishes in the net were sold to people right on the beach. It was truly a happy moment to the fishmen.

BTW, I went to India to study the impact of the tsunami happened a little more than one year ago. Because of the long wave length, fishmen in the open sea would not notice the tsunami waves, I was told that some of them did not realize what happened to their village and their family until they came back ...

I can not exactly remember how many years the temples have been there now. It is N thousand of year or so.
Maybe our great monk 'Tang Sheng' also went there when he went to the 'west heaven'.

Oh, a small story, the entrance ticket costs a foreigner 200 Yb (roughly 5 US dollar), but only 10 Rb to the Indians themselves.
We gave the guide $20 as tip, and late was told by the driver that he could make roughly $80 a month. It must be a happy day to the guide.

离印度之前, it occured to me that I forgot to take the pictures typic for India cities:

1) OX wandering around the city freely.
2) People take buses by hanging on outside the buses.

Both of these are true, but not absolutely.

Beef was still served on the menu, I was told that only the Hindus do not eat beef.
During rush hours, people indeed hanging around the buses! But it is not every buses.

More than a year after the Tsunami, those whose houses were damaged and had to be
displaced are still living in the temparary mobile houses showing in this picture.
-- inefficient?

In fact, in some places, there are indeed western style mobile houese built for the suffered.
However, the 'moden' house were useless there because under the tropical sun, it was like living in a stove inside. The tranditional houses that were transcended from thousands of years ago prove to be the final solution.
