PAVILION OF THE SENT-DOWN YOUTH
Green in every season,
The Baiyun Mountains tower
High above the City,
Their valleys bright with flowers.
In September 2010, a new feature was added to the landscape of Baiyun Mountain Park: the Pavilion of the Sent-Down Youth.
The term “sent-down youth” refers to the generation of Chinese who were sent to the countryside during the “Up to the Mountains and Down to the Villages” movement of the mid-twentieth century. The movement, which had its beginnings in 1955, reached a nationwide peak in 1968, and continued on a large scale into the late seventies, scattered nearly 18 million children of middle- and high-school age to China’s farthest hinterlands. In Guangdong, roughly one million students took part in the movement, spending their teenage years on the state-run farms of Hainan Island, the Leizhou Peninsula, and the Pearl River Delta, and in rural villages throughout the province’s vast countryside.
The experiences of the sent-down years became a touchstone for an entire generation, and the name zhiqing—“sent-down youth”—left an indelible stamp upon millions of hearts. Tempered in the forge of hardship, reborn in the years following Reform and Opening-Up, the members of the sent-down generation continue to give their utmost, laboring with quiet perseverance and unbending strength, bearing the memory of the past into a brave and uncharted future.
Upon the 60th anniversary of the new China, members of Guangdong and Hainan Sent-Down Youth Net launched an effort to dedicate a “Pavilion of the Sent-Down Youth” as a tribute to their generation; its construction was made possible by former sent-down youth all over Guangdong Province who, regardless of income or status, contributed selflessly to see it completed. In rain and in sun, rising proud against the mountains, the Pearl River, and the Cantonese landscape, the Pavilion of the Sent-Down Youth opens its halls to all comers, offering a moment of recollection, a respite in the present, and an inspiration for the future.
Guangdong and Hainan Sent-Down Youth Net would like to thank the management of Baiyun Mountain Park for its support in the construction and maintenance of this pavilion.
May this pavilion be a haven
For all who shelter here;
And may the memory of our courage
Remain unfaded through the years.
